Foiling Terms
Angle of Attack – The angle of the wing off the horizontal axis of the fuselage
Camber – Is the arch in the wing surface, either concave or convex along the axis of the chord
Chord – The length from the leading edge of the wing to the trailing edge
Thickness – Is the distance between the upper and lower surface of the wing
Wing Span – Distance from tip to tip of the wing
Lift – Upward force produced by the wing
Glide – Lift to efficiency/drag ratio
Yaw – This is the twisting along the vertical axis of the keel. Think of standing and then twisting at the waste from side to side.
Pitch – This is the forward and backward tilt along the horizontal axis of the fuselage. Think of pearling the board or flipping the board nose up. Front foot to Back foot pressure balance
Roll – This is the tilting of the wings along the horizontal Longitudinal axis. Think of standing in the middle of a titer toter and balancing it evenly. Heel to Toe balance
Anhedral – The Negative angle of a wing off the horizontal axis of the fuselage. This increases Stability
Dihedral – The positive angle of the wing off the horizontal axis of the fuselage. This decreases drag stability
Polyhedral – A wing having more than one angle along it’s span (Think gull wings)
